Cloud Art

Today at the lake my mom and I made cloud art with an app called Skitch. We took pictures of clouds and drew what we saw.

I made this lamb and my mom made the lady dancing.

I made a dragon and my mom did a whale.

Today I wonder...

This morning I wondered where the word gymnastics came from. Tonight we are watching more videos from Wonderopolis. They do not have one about gymnastics so we picked different ones instead.

The wonder of the day: How are mountains made?

My guess: I think mountains are made of rock and dirt. I don't have any guesses for how the rock and dirt gets there.

Mom's guess: My mom says she already knows, so she isn't going to guess. She taught this in Geography class.

What I learned: Watch what I learned on Educreations!

Another wonder: What is a volcano?

My guess: A volcano is a mountain with a big hole in it and it has lava.

Mom's guess: Mom knew this one too. Next I want to do one she doesn't know!

What I learned: My guess was right! A volcano is a hole that leads down to the crust and the mantle. Inside the volcano is magma. Lava is when it shoots out. I learned that nobody knows how many volcanos are under the ocean.

One more wonder: What happens if you swallow gum?

My guess: I think the same as my mom this time. I wonder if the gum tree video is true...

Mom's guess: It gives you a tummy ache and is harder for your digestive system to process.

What I learned: Gum takes about 2 days to digest and goes through like other food. But you still shouldn't swallow it.

Now I wonder how long it takes to digest regular food...

I wonder...

Tonight my mom and I watched some Wonderopolis videos. The wonder was: Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?

My guess: The bottle is made of something special

Mom's guess: Some sort of reaction with the air once the glue is out of the bottle

What we learned: I think my mom is right because in the video they told us to make sure you clean up your glue and screw the top on so it doesn't dry up. The air makes it dry up because there is water in the glue and when the water evaporates all that is left is the polymers. Polymers are what make things stick together.

Next we watched one where the wonder was: Where is the largest zoo?

My guess: I think it is in the United States

Mom's guess: San Diego Zoo

What we learned: We were both kind of right. Lots of places say they are the biggest zoo. In a game reserve you can hunt animals, but in a zoo you care for them and feed them and everything. The word zoo comes from zoology, which means studying animals.

Then wondered: What does a fox really say?

My guess: The same as dog

Mom's guess: Ringdingdinggerdingadingding!

What we learned: Different languages have different words for what animals say. A fox sounds like a dog and makes a sound that almost sounds like a scream. It hunts like a cat.

Next time we'll learn more!
